The only way to lose weight is to burn (use up) more calories than you take in (eat). Diet and exercise are the best and fastest way to accomplish your goal. Just be certain that you are making healthy choices in your foods, i.e., no empty calories (refined sugars, refined grains, etc.); no fatty foods, although a small amount of fat is good for you. Also, remember to drink plenty of water! Unbelievable as it is, water is essential to healthy living and safely losing weight.
Some type of cardio workout would probably be the best exercise, just make sure with your doctor that it's not going to be bad for your health. Start out with a little and gradually increase the length of time you exercise, so you don't burn yourself out too soon, injure yourself, or anything like that. Also remember that if you wake up the next day hurting, you've got to evaluate that pain to determine whether it's an injury or just muscles that are not used to being active. If it's an injury, you must treat it. If it's inactive muscles that are protesting, usually the best way is to use those same muscles again, lightly, to work out the pain. You also need alot of support and motivation for this to work.
I'd recommend a program called LoneStart, if you don't want to do this on your own. It's inexpensive, very sensible, you use your own food and supplements, and very supportive.
